Alright, so surprise! (read: actually not a surprise) I have been terrible at writing here. If there was something worse than terrible, that would be me. I realized over the weekend how excited I was when I started this ‘project’ and how quickly I gave up on it as soon as I got a smidge bit busy. The last few months have been a whirlwind to say the least. Traveling, deadlines, catching up with friends- I’ve hit every peak and drop that the roller coaster could possibly offer.
So where does that leave me now? Well, I sort of feel like I’m back in the same place that I was when I last wrote. Stuck in a rut? Sort of. Ready for some new challenges? Of course. Looking for help in the wrong places? You bet.
Coming out of Thanksgiving, I’m feeling a bit refreshed and ready to kick off December. Being with my family was refreshing, I’ll never turn down a Black Friday shopping trip with my mom. But it also reminded me of how far I’ve come in the last year since I saw them last- and where I might be a year from now.
This time last year, I was fresh into my job after spending the summer/fall months at a place where I was absolutely miserable working. I seriously dreaded getting up for work every morning, and finally had the guts to do something about it. Looking back, it was absolutely one of the best decisions that I could have made. I’m lucky to now be working somewhere where I am happy with what I do and with the people that I work with. And I’m sure that the next year will bring around even more changes.
As I was getting ready for work this morning, I threw on a random playlist. It made me remember how much a little bit of music can help push me through whatever I’m feeling. Whether it’s stressed, down, happy, whatever- I can always count on a solid life soundtrack for a little boost.
And that gave me an idea- why not kick off December by celebrating each day with a song that has played a big role in my year? Whether it’s something that has serious meaning or just a song that reminds me of a fun time with friends, it’d be neat to have them all compiled into a list by the end of the year.
So here goes the first day. There’s no one more appropriate than alt-J to kick off this project, they’re definitely one of my favorite discoveries of the year. Something about Breezeblocks really hits me, but I can’t really pinpoint what it is. The whole album An Awesome Wave is really just that. Awesome. Their sound is so much different than a lot of other things that I’ve been hearing lately and it almost always meshes well for different remixes (Ellie Goulding’s Tessellate, I’m looking at you.) Have a listen- of course I had to include the Ellie cover just for good measure. Your ears will thank me.
