Web Wanderings

It’s Friday (woo!) and that means we are back with another set of Web Wanderings. Web Wanderings (1)

I’ve spend a better part of this week catching up on rest after last week’s Musikfest craziness- beyond needed. I love that the weather is starting to cool down a bit and that the evenings are getting chillier. I even had my first pumpkin beer of the season last night! This weekend is filled with relaxing with friends, baseball games with the family, and even a concert thrown in (no surprises there).

While you’re finishing up your work week, take a second and have a look at this week’s highlights from around the web.

  • Mo’Ne Davis: This girl is taking the world by storm. Now, I’m from Williamsport, so I always get super into the Little League World Series (reserve your judgement, please), but this girl is killing it. She plays for the Mid-Atlantic team, which is from Philly. It’s super rare to see a girl playing in the series, especially one that throws 70mph fast balls. I’ve got my live stream ready to watch her team play at 3pm today!
  • Robin Williams’ Best Roles: I always loved Robin Williams; I think his death was actually the first celebrity death that I was truly sad to hear about. If nothing else, it’s good to bring the subject of mental illness into a serious conversation. Two of my favorite movie moments make it on this list: The Dead Poets’ Society and Good Will Hunting.
  • What Goes Through A Girl’s Head When Nominated for the Ice Bucket Challenge: I know the whole Ice Bucket thing is for a good cause, but can we all chill with the videos on Facebook and just donate to the cause? Anyways. Elite Daily posted this video and I must say- it’s pretty accurate on what I would imagine I would do. (read: I will not dump ice water on my head. sorry)

Have a great weekend!

Web Wanderings

This week has been a whirlwind! It’s my first year living right in the heart of Musikfest, and it’s been an adventure to say the least. I’ve gotten the chance to attend a handful of shows for work, and still more to come! Last weekend, I covered The All-American Rejects and Jason DeRulo. But the highlight of my week had to be seeing The Avett Brothers last night! They’re one of my favorite bands, and they never disappoint with their live shows. (shameless self plug with the links to my review of each show…)Web Wanderings (1)

But even in a week jam-packed with fun, I’ve had some down time to browse around. Have a look at some of my favorite things on the web from this week!

  • The Emoji Have Won the Battle of WordsIf you know me, you know I fluently speak emoji. This piece from the NY Times breaks down just how these little guys affect communication. When in doubt, insert monkey covering eyes face.

  • You’re Not An Exception: I’ve had a rough few weeks lately, dealing with some people-problems. Without getting into the details, let’s just say that these words from Maxie McCoy have served as the perfect reminder. Maxie is always full of great advice- follow her blog Ilo Inspired to stay in the loop!

  • Misty Copeland for Under Armour: I love seeing some love for the dance world in mainstream media. But more often than not, we get stuck with some inept person trying to pass as a ballerina. (let’s remember that Free People commercial….) Misty Copeland’s new ad for Under Armour is different. Have a look for yourself, you’ll see what I mean.

Happy Friday!

Web Wanderings

Another short week for me! Last weekend was Buffalo, this weekend I’m headed down to Myrtle Beach, SC for a few days with the family. My friend Molly is coming along too- I’m sure many a shenanigan will ensue.Web Wanderings (1)

So while I get ready to jet off to the airport, here’s a quick little list of some intriguing things from around the web this week.

17 Websites That Will Make You Smarter: I’m always looking to pick up a new trick here and there, and these are some great way to learn. I’m sure you’ve heard of some of these before, but there are some new ones as well.

BuzzFeed Asks Women Why They Take Birth Control: I’m not one to argue politics, but there has been some crazy stuff going on lately. I love that these women (all BuzzFeed employees) take a stance on why they take birth control. There is always more to the story that you might expect.

10 Reasons to Use Vine to Help You Build Your Brand: Vine is a platform that I struggle with. I know that people who do it well get a lot of recognition, but it just seems like such a daunting challenge to create something that will stick. This is a nice list of different ways that brands make it work, some with lots of techniques and some on a simpler base.

Here’s What Happens When Your Joke Goes Massively Viral On Twitter: This makes me chuckle. Jokes on social media follow such odd trends, and it’s interesting to see how this gained such a following so long after it was originally posted. I actually saw this tweet in my feed the other day, so the backstory was even more interesting.

Happy weekend!

Web Wanderings

And we’re back with another edition of Web Wanderings! Coming back from a holiday weekend was definitely rough, but these next two weeks are short ones for me too.

Our journey for the weekend!

Today, I’m heading up to Buffalo, NY with Amanda to catch City & Colour, Tokyo Police Club, and Young the Giant play at the Outer Harbor. I’ve never been to Buffalo, and a little mini weekend away will be nice. Any suggestions of bars/restaurants/sites we should be sure to hit? Let me know in the comments below!

In the meantime, here’s a little collection of internet goodies from this week. Enjoy!

Harry Potter Update: On Tuesday, J.K. Rowling released a brief Harry Potter update. The pages were posted on the Pottermore site, which promptly crashed due to the amount of traffic. Have a read on Imgur here.

Jimmy Kimmel Channels Maddie Ziegler:  Alright. It’s no surprise that I love Sia’s “Chandelier.” If you haven’t seen the music video (check it out here), it stars Maddie Ziegler of Dance Moms fame. This week, Sia performed on Jimmy Kimmel, but not before he tried his hand at the choreography. Hysterical.

Drive-By ComplimentsThese types of videos always make me happy. It doesn’t take much to brighten up someone’s day, and this guy seems to get that. He takes away and sort of creepiness that might get associated with random compliments and makes it all in good fun. I think my favorite has to be the couple with the balloon comment!

The Instagram Doodler: I’m always amazed at the works of art that people can create on apps like SnapChat. How do you get it to look so good by drawing with your finger?! And let’s not even discuss the shading and shadows. Helene Meldahl switches it up a bit by creating works of art on her mirror each morning and incorporating them into her Instagram photos. I would never want to erase these if they were on my mirror!

Happy weekend!

Web Wanderings

I spend a lot of little coffee breaks surfing the web. BuzzFeed, Mashable, FastCompany- you name it, I read it. I feel like I’m always sending links around to friends. As I hunt around for fun factoids, I might as well compile them in a place to share.Web Wanderings (1)

This is the start of my Web Wanderings. At the end of each week, I’ll pull together a few of my favorite things to share. From research studies to tech news, marketing campaigns to cute dresses, you’re bound to find a wide array of goodies here

As always, I’d love you hear your feedback! Give me a shout in the comments below, let me know the things that you’re sharing this week!

Always #LikeAGirl Campaign:  I’m always a sucker for these sorts of videos. Dove is the prime suspect, but this time we’ve got a gem of a piece from Always. This video is inspiring in all sorts of ways- not just for young girls, but for everyone.

Grrl Meets Marketing World: Why Brands Are Suddenly Preaching Fempowerment: To go along with #LikeAGirl, this article from Mashable breaks down the successes and failures of the ever-so-trendy ‘fempowerment’ advertisements.

Bon Iver’s “Heavenly Father”: It’s been quite some time since we heard some new stuff from him, and I’m loving this track that he’s created for Zach Braff’s new film. Preview it courtesy of NPR Music.

Behind the Scenes of Dancers Among Us: I absolutely adore this series (I own the book..and the calendar..). On this post, photographer Jordan Matter gives a sneak peek of what goes into getting that perfect shot.

Google’s SmartyPins: Alright, Google. You win again. This might be my new favorite way to jump-start my brain when I’m feeling bogged down. (I’ve always been a sucker for a good game of trivia!)

What have you stumbled across this week?
